WhatsApp's New Chat Lock Feature: A Step Forward for User Privacy

WhatsApp's New Chat Lock Feature: What We Know So Far

To address the growing need for privacy features, WhatsApp is currently working on a new chat lock feature that will allow users to lock individual chats. This feature was first spotted by WABetaInfo, a reputable WhatsApp tipster, in the latest Android beta update.

As the name suggests, the chat lock feature will allow users to keep their personal chats "locked and hidden" from prying eyes. Users will be able to use either their fingerprint or a passcode to open locked chats and read notifications. Just like archived chats, locked chats will be moved to a separate section and accessible via the same. This dedicated "Locked chats" section is shown in the screenshot below:



According to WABetaInfo, the chat lock feature will be available for both personal and group chats. In addition to hiding messages, this feature will also keep media files private. Photos, videos, or audio shared in locked chats won't be saved in the device gallery automatically, further adding to user privacy.

One interesting aspect of the chat lock feature is that if someone tries to access your phone and fails to provide the necessary authentication, they will be prompted to clear the chat to open it. This means that users might lose their chat history if someone forcefully tries to bypass their locked chat. However, it's important to note that this feature is still under development and not yet available on beta builds.


Potential Impact on User Privacy

The chat lock feature is a significant step forward for user privacy on WhatsApp. By allowing users to lock individual chats, WhatsApp is giving users more control over their conversations and personal information. This feature will be especially useful for users who share sensitive information through the app, such as financial details or medical information.

However, it's important to note that no privacy feature is foolproof. Even with the chat lock feature, there's still a possibility that someone could gain unauthorized access to your chats
